AI-generated product images can look perfect in a demo and disappoint in the catalogue: a slightly different colour, a distorted logo, a seam that is not there. Before choosing a vendor it pays to know which photos you start from, how faithfulness to the product is checked and who can use the images.
These are the questions to ask every vendor, us included.
Where you start
- Which photos are needed? Ghost packshots, flat lays, mannequin shots, 3D models. Ask whether you can start from the catalogue you already have and upload whole collections in bulk.
- What minimum quality is needed? Resolution, background, lighting. Ask for an example of a photo that does not work and why.
Faithfulness to the product
- How do you check the garment stays the same? Colour, fabric, logos, prints and seams must match the real product. Ask who reviews the images before publishing, and what happens when an image is not right.
- Test it on difficult items. All-over prints, sheer fabrics, shiny materials, small logos: these are the cases where differences between tools show at once.
Style and production
- Who decides the style? Models, settings, palettes, framing. Ask whether creative choices are made in the platform or go through a brief, and whether the style stays consistent across a whole collection.
- Which formats are delivered? E-commerce formats, social formats, short videos. Ask whether export to PIM and DAM follows your naming conventions.
Rights and contract
- Who can use the images and for what? Ask for the commercial use terms in writing, including channels, duration and countries.
- How does pricing work? Per image, by volume, flat fee. Ask what it costs to redo an image rejected in review.

Frequently asked questions
What is the main risk with AI product photos?
That the image does not match the real garment: different colour, fabric, logos or seams. That is why every image needs a review before publishing.
Which items should you test a tool on?
The difficult ones: all-over prints, sheer fabrics, shiny materials and small logos.
Can the generated images be used commercially?
It depends on the contract: ask for the terms in writing. With AI Studio, images produced for the catalogue are intended for the brand's commercial use, with terms set out in the contract.
