# Size-related return cost calculator for fashion e-commerce

By the We Wear team · October 18, 2026 · 3 min read

**In short**A free calculator that estimates, with your own numbers, how many returns a year come down to size, what they cost to handle and how much the returned goods are worth. The reduction in returns remains an assumption to verify with an A/B test.

How much do returns caused by the wrong size really cost you? Often the number is in no report: you know the overall return rate and the logistics cost, but not how much sizing alone accounts for. This calculator combines your own data and gives you an estimate in seconds.

Use your own figures: the values already entered are only an example. The tool runs in your browser and does not send or store anything.

## Size-related return cost calculator

Orders per year

Average order value (€)

Orders with at least one return (%)

Returns due to size or fit (%)

From the return reason customers give, if you collect it.

Cost of handling one return (€)

Shipping, inspection, refurbishing, refund.

Returns no longer sellable at full price (%)

Assumption: reduction in size-related returns **10%**

This is an assumption to verify with an A/B test on your store, not a promise.

Size-related returns per year**-**

Annual handling cost**-**

Value of returned goods**-**

Value lost on unsellable goods**-**

Returns avoided under the assumption**-**

Estimated annual saving**-**

The saving includes the handling cost avoided and the value of goods that keep their price: for items no longer sellable at full price the calculation assumes a loss of half their value. It does not include indirect benefits, such as stock that stays available or customers who buy again.

## How to read the result

- **The handling cost** is the most visible part: it is what you pay for every parcel that comes back, before you even know whether the item can be resold.
- **The value of returned goods** is not a loss in itself, but it is stock tied up for days or weeks, often right when the season needs it.
- **Goods no longer sellable** at full price are the hardest loss to see: items to refurbish, discount or discard.

## Where to find the numbers

Orders, average value and return rate are in your e-commerce reports. The share of returns due to size comes from the reason customers give in the return flow: if you do not ask for it yet, it is the first data point to start collecting. The handling cost comes from carrier invoices and the warehouse time spent on each return.

## How to verify the assumption

A reduction in returns is not estimated on paper: it is measured. With an [A/B test](https://wewear.tech/en/blog/ab-testing-fashion-ecommerce-how-to-measure?hsLang=en) some visitors see the size suggestion and others do not, over the same period, and you compare the return rates of the two groups. The test result replaces the calculator's assumption with your real number.

To understand where size-related returns come from, read the guide on [why shoppers order two sizes](https://wewear.tech/en/blog/why-shoppers-order-two-sizes?hsLang=en). SizeFlow starts from height, weight, age and gender, derives body measurements with a mathematical algorithm and compares them with each garment's measurement chart: the details are on the [SizeFlow](https://wewear.tech/en/sizeflow?hsLang=en) page.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where do I find the share of returns due to size?

From the return reason customers give in the return flow. If you do not collect it yet, it is the first data point to start asking for.

### Is the calculator's result a promised saving?

No. The reduction in returns is an assumption you choose: the real number only comes from an A/B test on your store.

### Is the data I enter stored?

No: the calculator runs in your browser and does not send or store anything.
