Preparing product photos for AI image generation · We Wear

AI-generated images are only as good as the photos they start from. A blurry packshot, with uneven light or a hidden detail, produces variants with the same flaws, sometimes amplified. Preparing your source photos well is the simplest way to get results you can publish without retouching.

This guide covers which photos you need, how to shoot them and what to check afterwards.

Packshot, flat lay and ghost mannequin

  • Packshot: the garment photographed on its own, on a neutral background.
  • Flat lay: the garment laid flat and photographed from above.
  • Ghost mannequin: the garment photographed on a mannequin, which is then removed in post-production to show volume and fit.

All three can be a good starting point. What matters is using the same type of photo consistently across the collection.

Which views you need

Front and back are the minimum. Garments with important details also need close-ups: pockets, collars, special seams, prints and logos. A detail that does not appear in the source photo cannot appear correctly in the generated image.

Light, background and resolution

  • Even lighting, with no hard shadows or reflections on shiny fabrics.
  • A clean, neutral background that makes it easy to separate the garment.
  • High resolution and focus across the whole garment.
  • Accurate colour: the most delicate point, worth checking against the physical sample.

What to check after generation

Every image should be reviewed before going live. The points to check are always the same: colour and fabric against the real garment, logos and prints legible and correct, seams, buttons and zips in the right place, a plausible fit for that style.

Sales channel rules

Website, marketplaces and social channels require different formats and ratios, and some marketplaces have strict rules on background and product position. Starting from clean photos lets you derive every format you need from the same image.

A check before uploading

Before uploading a batch of photos it is worth checking three things: that they are all the same type, that every planned view is there and that the file names let you link them to the right reference.

We have also written about when AI pays off and when to keep the shoot, in the guide on AI product photos. Module details are on the AI Studio page, which starts from the packshots you already have.

Frequently asked questions

Which photos do you need to generate product images with AI?

Packshots, flat lays or ghost mannequin shots all work, as long as the same type is used consistently across the collection, with at least front, back and the important details.

What should you check in generated images?

Colour and fabric against the real garment, correct logos and prints, seams, buttons and zips in the right place and a plausible fit for that style.

Which photos does AI Studio start from?

The packshots the brand already has: ghost or flat shots from the catalogue, which can be uploaded in bulk.
