# Virtual try-on: 8 questions to ask the vendor

**In short**Virtual try-on covers different technologies: avatars from measurements, augmented reality, images on the shopper's photo. Eight questions to ask every vendor about what the shopper sees, what is needed, how photos are handled and how results are measured.

"Virtual try-on" is a label covering very different technologies: 3D avatars built from measurements, augmented reality mirrors, images generated on the shopper's photo. Before choosing a vendor it pays to know which of these you are evaluating, what it takes to run and how your customers' photos are handled.

These are the questions to ask every vendor, us included.

## What the shopper sees

1. **What is the garment shown on?** A generic avatar, an avatar built from measurements, a catalogue model or the shopper's own photo. Each answers a different question: "how does it fit" or "how does it look on me".
2. **How faithful is it to the product?** Ask to try it on difficult items from your catalogue: prints, sheer fabrics, shiny materials, small details such as logos and buttons.
3. **How long does the shopper wait?** Ask for the real time from upload to result, on a smartphone.

## What you need to provide

1. **Which product images are needed?** Packshots, flat lays, 3D models. If every garment needs a 3D model, ask who produces them and at what cost per season.
2. **How does it integrate with the product page?** Ask how much work your developer needs to do and how new products are added.

## Customer photos and data

1. **Where are photos processed, how long are they kept and who can access them?** This is the most important question: ask for a written answer, together with the list of third-party providers involved.
2. **Are photos used to train models?** Ask whether this happens and whether shoppers can opt out.

## How results are measured

1. **Can you run an A/B test?** Comparing shoppers with access to try-on against those without, over the same period, is the only way to measure its effect on conversions and returns in your store.
