# Fashion e-commerce glossary: sizing, virtual try-on and 3D

By the We Wear team · October 17, 2026

**In short**A practical glossary of the terms you meet working on a fashion store: sizes and measurements, trying and discovering products, images and 3D, measuring results.

Sizes, fit, virtual try-ons, 3D models: people working in fashion e-commerce use terms every day that come from very different worlds, from pattern making to 3D graphics. This glossary collects the most common ones, with short, practical definitions.

## Sizes and measurements

### Bracketing

The habit of ordering the same item in several sizes to try them at home and return the ones that do not fit.

### Size curve

The range of sizes a style is produced in and the measurement differences between one size and the next.

### Grading

The process of scaling a base pattern up and down to the other sizes in the curve.

### Body measurements

Measurements of the human body, such as height, chest, waist, hips and inseam.

### Size sheet

The document with a garment's actual measurements, size by size, taken on the garment rather than on the body.

### Size chart

The table that links body measurements to a brand's or a category's sizes.

### Fit

How a garment sits on the body: slim, regular, relaxed, oversized. It depends on the difference between body and garment measurements.

### Size recommendation

A tool that tells shoppers the best size of an item, based on some data about the person and the garment's measurements.

## Trying and discovering products

### Virtual try-on

Trying a garment virtually: shoppers see how it would look on them. It can be based on the shopper's photo or on an avatar.

### Complete the look

Suggesting other items to wear with the one the shopper is viewing, to build a look.

### Shop the look

A photo, often from a campaign, in which the items worn become shoppable.

### Visual search

Search that starts from a photo or screenshot and finds similar products in the catalogue.

## Images and 3D

### Packshot

A photo of a product on its own, on a neutral background, used on product pages.

### Flat lay

A photo of a garment laid flat and shot from above.

### Ghost mannequin

A photo on a mannequin where the mannequin is removed in post-production to show the garment's volume and shape.

### 3D configurator

A tool that lets customers build a product by choosing materials, colours and options and see it in 3D in real time.

### GLB and glTF

The most widely used formats for showing 3D models in a browser, with geometry, materials and textures.

### Body scan

Capturing the body in 3D, with a scanning booth or a smartphone, to obtain a body model and measurements.

## Measuring results

### A/B test

A comparison between two groups of visitors, one with a change and one without, over the same period, to see the real effect of that change.

### Return rate

The share of items sold that are returned, best read together with the reasons for return.

Each entry is covered in more depth in one of our guides: [size charts](https://wewear.tech/en/blog/how-to-build-size-chart-ecommerce?hsLang=en), [photo-based virtual try-on](https://wewear.tech/en/blog/photo-based-virtual-try-on-how-it-works?hsLang=en), [visual search](https://wewear.tech/en/blog/visual-search-fashion-ecommerce?hsLang=en), [3D models for the web](https://wewear.tech/en/blog/cad-to-glb-3d-models-web-configurator?hsLang=en) and [A/B testing](https://wewear.tech/en/blog/ab-testing-fashion-ecommerce-how-to-measure?hsLang=en).

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between a size chart and a size sheet?

A size chart links body measurements to sizes; a size sheet lists a garment's actual measurements, size by size, taken on the garment.

### What is grading?

It is the process of scaling a base pattern up and down to the other sizes in the curve.

### What is shop the look?

A photo, often from a campaign, in which the items worn become shoppable.
