# 3D configurators for furniture and machinery: how to start

October 16, 2026

Anyone who sells configurable products knows the scene. A customer in the showroom leafs through a fabric swatch book, looks at a photo of a sofa in another colour and tries to picture the result. A dealer fills in a form with finish and accessory codes, and a few days later there is a phone call to work out what they meant. The more options you offer, the harder it is for customers to see what they are buying.

A 3D configurator solves exactly this: it shows the product as it will be, with the customer's choices, while they make them. In this article we look at why furniture and machinery sellers need one, what to prepare before starting and which questions to ask before choosing a provider.

## Why sellers of configurable products need to show them

Sofas, chairs, tables, tractors, trucks and machinery have one thing in common: the same model exists in many combinations. Versions, fabrics, finishes, colours, trims and equipment multiply with each other, and no photo catalogue can show them all.

Without visualisation, the burden falls on both buyer and seller:

- **The customer has to imagine.** A fabric swatch a few centimetres wide does not show what a three-seater sofa will look like in that shade.
- **The salesperson has to explain.** Every negotiation takes time to describe combinations the customer cannot see.
- **The dealer has to translate.** Requests arrive in different forms, with incomplete codes or verbal descriptions, and have to be pieced together.
- **Mistakes surface late.** An unclear combination is discovered once the quote is done, or worse, once the product is in production.

Seeing the configured product removes uncertainty on both sides. The customer decides with more confidence and the seller receives a clear request.

## Technical tools and a visual experience are two different things

Many companies already have 3D models because they use them in design. It is tempting to think it is enough to show them to customers. In practice, technical tools and a configurator for customers and dealers meet different needs.

- **Tools for designers** are for drawing, checking dimensions and preparing production. They work with heavy files full of internal detail and require specific skills.
- **A visual experience for customers and dealers** has to open in a browser, load quickly, show materials and colours well and be usable by someone who has never seen 3D software.

This is why design models almost always need to be converted and made lighter. What matters to the customer is the surface: how the fabric looks, how a paint finish reflects light, how the product changes from one version to the next. Screws and internal components are not needed.

## What to prepare: files and data

A configurator is only as good as the material it starts from. Before you begin, it is worth gathering three sets of information.

### The 3D models

- The 3D files you already have, in formats such as GLB or OBJ, or your CAD design files.
- If no models exist, the technical sheets with dimensions and a set of photographs of the product from several angles.
- The list of versions: sizes, number of seats, trim levels, base configurations.

### The materials and finishes library

- Fabrics with name, code and a good quality photographed or scanned sample.
- Wood, metal, paint and plastic finishes, with the colour references you use in production.
- Piping, stitching, trims and other details the customer can choose.

### The list of options and what goes together

- Every option available for each model, including equipment and accessories.
- Which choices go together and which exclude each other: a fabric available only on some versions, an item of equipment that requires a certain trim level.
- The information you want to receive at the end of a configuration in order to prepare a quote.

This last point is often the most underestimated. The rules on what can be combined sometimes live in the heads of a few people. Writing them down is useful well beyond the configurator.

## Questions to ask before choosing a provider

Every provider works differently. These questions apply to anyone, us included:

- Which file formats can you start from, and what happens if we have no 3D models?
- Who converts and optimises the models, and who checks how the materials look?
- Does the configurator run in the browser, on tablets and large screens too?
- Can we use the same configurator on the website, in the showroom, at dealers and at trade fairs?
- In what form do we receive the final configuration, and who receives it?
- How are new fabrics, finishes or models added when the range changes?
- How are options that do not go together handled?
- Can we see the configurator working with one of our products before deciding?

The answers tell you a lot about how much work will be left to you and how easy it will be to keep the configurator up to date over time.

## How We Wear does it with Config3D

[Config3D](https://wewear.tech/en/3d-configurator?hsLang=en) is the We Wear web 3D configurator. The customer or dealer chooses model, versions, fabrics, finishes, colours, trims and equipment directly on the 3D model and sees every change in real time.

The same configurator runs on your website, on a tablet in the showroom or at dealers, and on a screen at trade fairs. Customers get the same experience wherever they meet your product, and you manage a single tool.

At the end, the configuration reaches your sales team or the retailer as a clear summary, ready for a quote. No codes to decipher and no phone calls to work out what the customer wanted.

We start from the 3D models you already have, in GLB or OBJ, or from CAD files that we convert. If no models exist, our team builds them from technical sheets or photographs of the product.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why is a 3D configurator useful for furniture and machinery?

Because the same model exists in many combinations of versions, fabrics, finishes and equipment that no catalogue can show in full. The configurator shows the product with the customer's choices as they make them.

### What do you need to start with a 3D configurator?

You need 3D models or CAD files (or technical sheets and photographs if no models exist), a library of materials and finishes, and the list of options with the rules on which go together.

### How does Config3D work?

Config3D is a web 3D configurator: the customer or dealer chooses model, versions, fabrics, finishes, colours, trims and equipment on the 3D model in real time. It runs on the website, on showroom tablets and on trade fair screens, and the configuration reaches sales as a summary ready for a quote.
